คณะ ดอกไม้ป่า - ระบำยอดหญ้า

คณะ ดอกไม้ป่า - ระบำยอดหญ้า  (tape, VT Promotion, V.T.002)

This time something very special, a Thai tape I bought from a second hand record store here in Helsinki for 1€. The name of the artist and tape title translates in western alphabets as Khana dok mai pa - Rabam yot ya (extra special thanks to Peter from excellent มนต์รักเพลงไทย blog for translating).
Charming girl pop in Thai style. I think this tape has been released in 1983 and it is the second album of this female duo.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 32

Le-Thuy, Dien-Lang & Tan-Tai - Hang-vo biet ngu-co  7"  (Viet-Hai, 45 V/P)

And still more musical theater.
So far this is the last in my series of Vietnamese vinyl uploads. I still have some unripped records with picture covers but at the moment I feel like maybe I'll post them sometime in a distant future... or maybe not. Check back for some other interesting stuff in a future :)

VIETNAM VINYLS part 31

Van Huong & Phuong Lien - Ông Trượng Tiên Bứu  7"  (Viet-Hai, G.P. 590)

Some more musical comedy. This time only side A because the record is in such a bad condition I could do nothing to fix the B-side. First 20 seconds of side A skips like hell.
One of the rare viet vinyls which have a discogs page.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 30

Various Artists - Hai chang re hut 7"  (Viet-Hai, G.P. so 11)

Musical comedy time! With some occasional old-style rock thrown in. Reminds me of Viet Vinyls part 19. Maybe my favorite ca kịch trào phúng of all my posts.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 29

Various Artists - Thuong ca mua ha / Bai ca ky niem / Tren duong ve tham em / Nho  7"  (Vo Tuyen, GP so 1113/TB/TTCH/BC3/XB)

Some charming slow big band/exotica/latino/hawaiian influenced music here with male & female vocals. Excellent moody stuff. Too bad the record is seriously trashed.

MAHARAJ - self-titled 7" EP

MAHARAJ: self-titled 7" EP  (O.S.T., 001)

In the middle of my viet vinyl -series I give you something completely different this time: a Sri Lankan 7" from 1976 (according to discogs-page). Four songs of quite middle-of-the-road basic rock with some occasional reggae influences. There's not much information about the band or the label so this remains as a complete mystery to me. If you have any information about Maharaj please post a comment.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 28

Various Artists - Gao trang trang thanh / Mot chuyen di  7" (Vo Tuyen, G.P. 3418/1426)

Basic stuff incorporating western and oriental influences with male/female vocs. Some hilarious singsong part in the middle of first track.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 27

Ban Xuan-Phat / Ut Bach-Lan / Tan Tai - Chu thoong lanh vo / Yeu la gi  7"  (Tan Thanh, TT-66-7-007)

A bit more traditional singing/talking with minimal musical background.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 26

Various Artists - Tinh co quyen 7"  (Tan Thanh, TT-4-67)

Traditional musical theater.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 25

Nhat Truong / Phuoc Van - (unknown)  7"  (Tan Thanh)

Some more western influenced tracks. A1 is a male/female -duet, A2 & B2 sung by Phuoc Van (female) & B1 by Nhat Truong (male). A1 to B1 are moody ballads (even though I don't understand what they are singing about), which I find easy to relate to because as a Finn we have a long history of melancholic tango and moody easy listening (even depressing at times). Last track is totally different genre with old school rock'n'roll and a twist beat.
Highly recommended even though A1 suffers from some serious surface noise (and that one is already fixed - so you can only imagine what the original unfixed piece sounded like).

VIETNAM VINYLS part 24

Unknown artist(s) - unknown titles 7" (details unknown)

This is seriously frustrating issue. One of the viet vinyls I enjoy most, and the labels are totally trashed so I have no idea who the artists are!
Four tracks of easy-for-western-ears vintage popular music. A-side is comedy music (at least I hear it so refering to the singing style and the spoken intro), B-side is more serious crooner-style pop.
Especially on side A (and some old thai records I've heard) there is something that reminds me of old Jamaican ska records... maybe it is the sound of the horn section.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 23

Mỹ Châu, Thanh Sang / Lệ Thủy ‎– Tình Đât Đơ Miên Đông / Là Thắm (Diahat, 00202-79-CN.2)

This time I present you one of the very few viet vinyls which have their own discogs page.
A side being a mixture of sweet mondo pop and trad. B side is completely more traditional song devoid of mondo exotica pop influences.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 22

Thanh-Tuyen - U hoai / Em chi yeu anh 7"  (Hong Hoa, K.D. so 4431/4811)

This time two charming tunes by Thanh-Tuyen. Basically the same musical formula as before.
Funny thing, by watching the waveform below, you can see how the tracks on both sides follow the same structure, so you can even call both tracks being a different variations of a same song, even though they are written by different persons ( Y-Van & Ha-Phuong). I haven't paid attention that much to waveforms before but I doubt that you can see the same similarity on many other tracks I've posted. Maybe it is some basic structure of Vietnamese popular music on which the songs are built on, just like western popular music has this repetition of verse-chorus-verse...

VIETNAM VINYLS part 21

Various Artists - Vo dai lang so vo 7"  (Hong Hoa, K.D. so 3424/16-8-65)

And some more hài kjch. Badly scratched disc with loud surface noise.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 20

Various Artists - Than nu dang cua dinh 7"  (Hong Hoa, K.D. so 48/4-1-60)

Some more hài kjch, comedy, frentic dialogue with musical intermezzos thrown in. I think heard a small part of Stephen Foster's composition Oh! Susanna in there (or Hei kuu-ukko as we Finns known it better).

lauantai 7. toukokuuta 2016

VIETNAM VINYLS part 19

Various Artists - Tiet-dinh-san 7"  (Hong Hoa, K.D. so 221/18-1-65)

This time some ca kịch trào phúng, alias satirical theatre, with a lot of funny dialogue with complementary instrumentation and even a surprising short pop part in the beginning of side B.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 18

Ut Bach-Lan / Thanh-Tuyen - Chieu bien khu / Nguoi yeu la linh chien 7"  (Hong Hoa, K.D. so 433/4307)

Here's another one of that (quite familiar by now) lounge-trad form. Especially side A is one of my favorites.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 17

(unknown artists) - (unknown) 7"  (Hong Hoa)

OK, here is a trashy vinyl with equally destroyed labels. A-side female singer and B-side male singer.
Forget the scratchy sound because the A-side is truly entertaining piece with so many unexpected changes it makes the listener asking him/herself what the hell is going on.
A-side starts with lounge mood and turns into minimal trad after 1½ mins. Then at 3 mins the singer for some curious reason steps into echo chamber for a minute, then steps back at the un-reverbed state singing her trad tune. At 5 mins she changes into lounge for a half minute only to return back to trad for the last half mins.
B-side is slightly more coherent piece but still having a fair amount of changes for a six-minute song. It starts with a lounge feel, at 1:15 turns into trad. At 3½ mins it sounds like the track is changing even though the label (as much as I can see from it) states it having only one song. When there's one minute left, the style changes suddenly into latin exotica for half minute after which it suddenly turns back into trad mood.
'Divertissement par excellance'.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 16

Anh-Hong, Ngoc-Huong, Thanh-Hai - Ni co va kiem khach 7"  (Hong Hoa)

Shifting now from Viet Nam label to Hong Hoa. Traditional dialog musical piece.
This is propably the most trashed record of the whole 'viet vinyls' -series. First of all, the surface noise on the first couple minutes of each side is so overwhelming it is in places louder than music (and believe me - this is the cleaned version!). And secondly, if you look at the pictures above, you can see that someone has tried to carve the center hole bigger - for whatever reason, (s)he hadn't done a very good job. Therefore a bit wowing sound especially on side A. You can sure live without this one but for archival reasons I put it online anyway. Not a very strong beginning for my Hong Hoa label uploads, but fear not... there are better things coming up.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 15

Che Linh - Khung troi ky niem 7" EP  (Viet Nam, M.3679-3680)

Male crooner with four tracks of excellent melancholic soft pop/lounge. Vinyl once again in very bad condition.

torstai 14. huhtikuuta 2016

VIETNAM VINYLS part 14

Various Artists - Khuc ca duyen lanh / Noi buon dem bong 7"  (Viet Nam, M. 7057-7058)

Charming lounge-trad -combination.

keskiviikko 13. huhtikuuta 2016

VIETNAM VINYLS part 13

Various Artists - 7"  (Viet Nam, M. 3443-3444)

Three singers and four songs. One of my favorites. Great smooth lounge pop - song descriptions are on A-side 'bolero' and on B-side 'slow rock'. Unfortunately this is one of those records where surface noise is unbearably loud compared to music itself (plus five times needle gets stuck) so I had to do some serious editing and cleaning on this one.

VIETNAM VINYLS part 12

Le Thuy & Ming Phung & Tan Tai - Ngay buon / Ao trang ngay xua 7"  (Viet Nam, M. 6979-6980)

Le Thuy singing duets with different male companions. Typical mixture, except this time lounge parts being in the beginning and in the middle of each song (instead of starting with and ending to lounge parts). A-side lounge parts are quite good smooth pieces. Dirty vinyl.
