Kaamoshow 17 - no theme, no sense, no regrets

This time a splendid mix of variable styles; from afro-rock to industrial, death metal, indie electro and naive lo-fi pop. Also few surprising cover versions of Throbbing Gristle, Neubauten & Laibach songs. All of them are nice tracks for different reasons. Enjoy... I know I do.

Update for Funana Absurdos

Fixed the file for Funana Absurdos compilation tape because there was some distortion related problem in the mp3 conversion in one track on side A because of some heavy bass frequencies. Original tape is ok, so I made the mp3 conversion again with a better quality and now it seems to be ok.
New download link here.

KAAMOSHOW 16 - atmospheres, motor music & male choir singing

Some excellent stuff... again... starting with a mighty and very atmospheric track from the hermit boys of Iceland. After that some beatiful soundtrack music from interesting film Der Untergang which tells the story of Hitler´s last days in bunker. Then there is Balanescu Quartet employing the haunting and extraordinary (sampled) vocals of late Romanian singer Maria Tanase. Then follows an excellent track by practically unknown Italian electro unit Res_et which I accidentally saw play live in Ljubljana Metelkova Mesto few years ago. Not much is known about them outside Italy, which is a shame. After that comes dear old Scott. Many old Scott fans must have withdrawed in terror when they heard The Drift album. Probably one of the most disliked albums of last few decades, but I love it! Somehow I think of Nico when I listen to that album, there is same kind of intimacy, spookyness and vulnerability present in their music. Last summer I saw Dakha Brakha and Kimmo Pohjonen play live separately and together and that probably was one of the musical highlights of last year for me. Two groups/performers which are vaguely labeled under ethno or folk music. Just listen to those tracks and you know there is so much more than that. Kimmo Pohjonen´s Moottorisinfonia makes a good use of rural machines combined with Kimmo´s own 'shamanistic' (pardon me for using that cliche) and ritualistic performance. It is almost industrial. It really annoys me that A) I never had a chance to witness Ramsöö´s Motor Music Festival, and B) there are no official recordings of Maamoottorisinfonia or other motor music projects which have happened in last few years in Finland. In the end few other tracks I felt like putting there. Staalplaat are just as weird as always, and at last there is some male bonding choir action which we all are eager to hear... aren´t we?

SIGUR ROS: untitled track 6 [from ( )]
STEPHAN ZACHARIAS: Der krieg ist aus [from Der Untergang soundtrack]
BALANESCU QUARTET: Life and Death [from Maria T]
RES_ET: Street [from Suitable Life With a Lack Of Brain EP]
SCOTT WALKER: A lover loves [from The Drift]
DAKHA BRAKHA: Vesna [from Na Mezhi]
KIMMO POHJONEN: piece from Maamoottorisinfonia [unreleased live recording]
STAALPLAAT SOUNDSYSTEM: Yokomono [from compilation Avanto Festival 2005]
SOUTH WALES STRIKING MINERS CHOIR: Comrades in arms [from Shoulder To Shoulder (split LP with Test Dept)]

KAAMOSHOW 15 - "Unknown Pleasures" by Joy Division

Just recently I went to see Peter Hook & The Light perform the whole Unknown Pleasures album + various other Joy Division classics. Well, all JD songs are classics, some of them more some of them less. The idea of Hooky performing JD songs have been issue which has caused a lot of debate, some fascinated, some critical. I had also my doubts, but for me it was the extremely rare possibility to see someone perform these classics live so there I went. Besides I think Hooky is the right person to cover these songs since his bass sound is the most remarkable part in JD`s music (after, of course, Ian´s vocals). The first funny surprise was that the gig intro was Kraftwerk´s Trans-Europe Express which caused some brits to make some not-so-polite comments. For a beginning there was few older tracks, then Unknown Pleasures album from start to beginning and after that some older tracks and classics like Atmosphere, Transmission & LWTUA, as a last encore there was Ceremony. It was fun to watch Hooky posing with his bass without playing it in majority of tracks! Bass playing was handled throughout the gig by his son (I believe). Hooky posed, sang and played catchy bass riffs once in a while, rest of the band kept a low profile. Band played fine enough for me to enjoy this gig, but something was missing. Something I just can´t point my finger at. Maybe it was a lack of passion or something. Just like having a beer and watching a remarkably good JD-coverband (which they actually are). As I listened to people around me, I remarked that there were alarmingly lot of people who knew Joy Division only by name and a few hit songs. You know the type: young indie hipsters who´d rather be at Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Prince of Assyria gig drinking sweet alcoholic mixers, comparing clothes & watching who is there and who is not. If they were forced down to listen Unknown Pleasures or Closer throughout alone in a cellar, they probably couldn´t take it. On the other side there were old punks and misfits who have probably listened those albums a few too many times. One old and apparently confused punk near me broke in whining and moaning when Day of the Lords started. Oh, the power of music... or maybe the power of chemical substances? In the end, it was nice evening and I certainly would welcome Hooky & co. here again to perform Closer (which they are doing at least in Brits next summer).

I´m offering you two live mixes of Unknown Pleasures, both from bootleg sources. First one is a collection of Joy Division live material, second is a collection of Hooky performing live with Light or Section 25. You decide yourself which one sounds better. Warning: expect some seriously bootleg-quality material!

Tracks: Disorder, Day of the lords, Candidate, Insight, New dawn fades, She´s lost control, Shadowplay, Wilderness, Interzone, I remember nothing

KAAMOSHOW 14 - Laibach special

Just recently I went to see Laibach play live their brand new revisited set and I got to say it was probably the best Laibach show I´ve seen (and I´ve seen them seven or eight times). Old songs were given a new treat making them more accessible for people who like their WAT/Volk era songs. I like the original early 80´s industrial songs but these new versions were just as good giving them brand new vibe. Even though some versions were totally different they were still recognisable. Band was in a good mood and sound was nice. As a live band they were missing the drummer girls which was probably a slight disappointment to some audience members but I felt they were this time more "a band" than a show group. Just can´t wait to get my hands on new bunch of album sets "Volkswagner", "Laibach revisited" & that massive Vinyl On Demand LP-box set (all of which were supposed to be released in 2010).
To celebrate the greatness of their music, here is a special collection of three decades of Laibach. Warning for all you hi-fi wankers: includes some bootleg quality material.

intro (live Helsinki 1.12.2006) [private recording]
Drzava [from split tape with Last Few Days]
Brat moj [from Rekapitulacia 1980-84]
To the new light [from Jesus Christ Superstars]
Brat moj (revisited version live Helsinki 9.3.2011) [private recording]
Hymn to the black sun [from Kapital]
For you blue [from Let It Be]
Vade retro satanas (live 2000) [bonus track from remastered cd of Rekapitulacija 1980-84]
Du bist unser [from WAT]
Contrapunctus 1 [from Kunst der Fuge]

KAAMOSHOW 13 - Spettro Records special

This time I´m offering you the special mix dedicated to Italian net label Spettro rec. Lots of free downloads by artists who can be filed under experimental. Sometimes noisy, sometimes silent and calming, at times just confusing and sometimes just plain rocking. They also sell beatiful hand made cd´s so go get them at http://www.spettrorec.com/.

"Spettro records was born from the minds of three free individuals determined to create a distibutive modality for their music and artistic endeavors that no one has wanted to listen to.
We aren't fooling ourselves in believing that you could be particularly interested either, but through this name we are giving release to works that took a lot of effort in terms of emotions, research and meaning. A spectre in a haze of labels, we don't have any specific intentions if not to distribute our music, the work of our requests to those who may benefit from it. A benefit which will not be either in economic, musical nor cultural terms but simply emotional, in the sense of an emotional exchange between free individuals. Opening a music label based on the matter may not have any sense today but it has sense for us who have delivered these works and we hope will make sense to those who will understand them.
Spettro doesn't welcome in its womb nothing which deals with scenes, styles, enterprises or subjugations. Spettro greets the ethereal of a music that strips from the decaying matter and undresses into content, pure meaning later being accepted in the limits of a format, cd-r or whatever, which is simply a container to free itself from, in order to find a new homeland in the conscience and empathy of others.
For these reasons fundamental requisite of Spettro's works is the content, free from formand aesthetic quality in order to favor a quality of soul. In fact, requisite to performing works is to remain and operate in the solitude and the isolation of one's own home, away from studies from the scenes and all the rest. The notion of DIY is popular nowadays, but the important thing is that these works didn't cost anything to be created if not the effort of the single individual in conceiving them and of the single listener to understand them.
Firstly, Spettro began as an outlet for the silent works of a group of friends who met and decided to express themselves in the form more congenial to them reasserting the absolute priority of content over form. In the absence of arguments to justify living on this earth, we, who are involved, can only forget the discourse and stick to the pure meaning directed in forms which words cannot contain, for the intrinsic vagueness of their being, thus turning to music as meaningfulness. Though empty, these works testify a life project, a fragile and etheral existence, yet necessary for those who pursue it. We are what we musically express and our being is defined as the work proceeds which isn't a single finishing line rather a temporary and unresolved working process always incomplete and because of this always yearning for a more lively and signifificant being. The impossibility of a term, as of a complete form and even the need of a trial that involves us existentially and eternally.
We don't define ourselves as avant guarde of anything nor as belonging to anything rather only as our own being finished. We are less than avant-garde, maybe we belong to a particular sub-garde type, inside a perpetual motion that doesn't find progress rather just a spiral-like movement which instead of adding, subtracts, deprives us of our certainties. A deeper and deeper digging that might bring us to an unexpected result:our being finished, the emptiness of our intentions. The anguish of feeling one's being, total, finished, resolved is too great, that's why we fragment ourselves in trial works which are never finished. Sub-garde doesn't represent the opposite of avant-garde, rather the conscience of the infinite development inside the time and aspect of things and the consequent attention to what internally and out of time motivates this.
Spettro contains our works which set the moment they rose. We are gathering them here hoping they may regain order through the contact with the other, whoever he may be.
This is the aptitude that characterizes Spettro's works, even if they will probably never be brought to light. From an objective point of view the sound we propose is the one produced by people and not money. This doesn't mean to sound as a protest against something or someone. We just want to present a point of view which is progressively dying out, that is the human one at a time when what makes the difference is the expensive surface of things.
All our albums are handmade, created with love and care, and made on demand."

FUNANA ABSURDOS - EXPERIMENTAL SOUNDS FROM CABO VERDE

Now here is something different. Instead of usual mix show I post this time a little compilation tape called "Funana Absurdos - experimental sounds from Cabo Verde". As some regular followers (are there any?) of my other blog might remember, I spent a holiday in Cabo Verde recently. This tape is a compilation of totally unknown (at least to me) underground artists of Cabo Verdean origin... I think, since there is absolutely no information whatsoever included. Only a 60 minute tape with seven tracks which range from noise to ambient, cut-up loops of some local hit music (my wild guess), field recording madness and something which I would call 'drunken ambient' (listen to the last track and you know what I mean).

Tape was ripped as two mp3-files (side A & side B). There´s music approx. 40 mins but it seems that tracks have been dubbed on radio interference noise recordings which you can hear in the middle of songs and in the end of both sides. Strange. Place it right next to your "Extreme music from Africa" -compilation cd.

KAAMOSHOW 11 - three decades of Einstürzende Neubauten

This time I´m concentrating on one of my old-time favorites: EN. Reason for this is that I´m still quite excited that I got to see them play live two days in a row just recently. They have been around for three decades and I still remember the time when I bought my first EN record (Strategies Against Architecture Vol. I) sometime in 1985-1986 as a teenager from the most unusual place for such action: the small Greek holiday resort island Kos! I wasn´t quite sure then if I really liked it or not but it sure sounded exciting. Years passed and I fell victim for temporary speed/death metal disease. I traded most of my good records for Venom, Metallica, Mercyful Fate etc. which I truly regretted later. Lucky me, I saw reason some years later and found EN again.

I tend to think like most EN fans (at least the ones I know) that their prime time was back in the 80´s. Halber Mench album (and especially the video) is great, Fünf auf der Nach... is good also but recently I began to appreciate Patienten O.T. most. Haus der Lüge is their last truly great album and Tabula Rasa is the record that I appreciate least. Later albums sure have their moments but unfortunately they tend to be of uneven quality. Looks like the more EN get professional soundwise, they lose that 'something' which I appreciate in their 80´s material. It´s surprising that their most interesting post-80´s material (which is often based on material recorded in the early days) is hidden in limited edition cd´s which can be ordered only from their official web store (while they last). Especially I was surprised how good (i.e. challenging) Unglaublicher Lärm, Grundstück, Stimmen Reste & EN vs. Redux Orchestra are compared to official albums.

A few words about three decades of EN tour Tampere gigs which I witnessed. The first night was an evening with EN when they played smaller set in club enviroment, then Blixa performed a shorter version of Rede/Speech, closing act was a duo Rudolf Moser and Christian Meyer who played a full percussion-heavy & e-bow driven set. Second night was 2½ hours of EN on a bigger stage. Sound was good and band was in good mood except Blixa who at times showed his ill-tempered side by furiously pointing his anger at the sound men because of some stage monitoring issues... I think. The overall feeling was a repeat from the night before when few times Blixa turned from sarcastically funny joke telling gentleman to anger-ridden art-diva in a matter of seconds. On the second night I was quite disappointed for the lack of 80´s material but on the other hand the more recent stuff that I did not like that much on record sounded much better live (as usual but this time it was very clear from the beginning). Luckily they played the first night Seele brennt, Sand & Armenia (+ two other tracks). Two nights of good, clean entertainment and it is always nice to see those curious metal objects live on stage. Period, enjoy.

KAAMOSHOW 10 - Flow festival 2010 special

I rarely go to summer festivals nowadays bacause A) I hate big crowds of people, B) there´s usually too few good artists and a shitload of artists you don´t like, C) uneven weather conditions can seriously ruin your experience, D) very few bands actually sound good in the open air festivals (compared to club gigs) & D) I´m too old for that shit. Unusually I decided to go to local Flow festival next weekend for two days. I´ve always thought that this particular urban festival is a gathering of so called indie-electro hipsters and other miserable wannabes but for my surprise there´s a lot of interesting experimental acts playing this year (+ some urban ethnic stuff). So, I guess I have to comb my hair and go out to the real world this time. Here is a special mix (divided in two parts) presenting some of the artists and styles to be heard this year.
